A proactive policy to lower carbon emissions

Following 2011, which was a tough year for PDL, action taken in 2012 to reduce CO2 emissions at the site has proved effective. Indeed, the ratio of CO2 emissions per kilogram of paper produced dropped by 15% between 2011 and 2012; mainly due to lower gas consumption, as well as a change to the steam mix by significantly reducing the use of steam from fossil fuels in favour of steam from the Thonon-les-Bains Household Waste Incineration Plant.
With regard to PDV, the downward trend in CO2 emissions per kilogram of paper produced can be confirmed. Indeed, between 2008 and 2012, emissions decreased by 14.6%, while at the same time production at the site increased by more than 14.5%.

Calculations made with respect to our carbon footprint, validated by PwC, are from a downstream intermediate extraction excluding freight. Therefore, the scope includes the use of energy (for industrial processes and heating buildings) and employee travel (excluding the sales network).

With the start-up of the biomass boiler at PDL, Bolloré Thin Papers predicts a significant improvement in its carbon footprint in 2013. It has been operating at full capacity since 1st February. 50% of the site’s steam requirements are now produced from renewable energy, thus cutting down on 11,500 tons of CO2 emissions per year. As for PDV, commissioning of the new biomass boiler at the site is scheduled for the end of the year.
